Located in the west of Zambia are the endless open expanses of Luiwa Plains National Park. This region is the stage for the second-largest wildebeest and zebra migration in Africa with animals travelling from Angola to the luscious green swathes of Luiwa.

About Liuwa Plains National Park

The open savannahs are so vast here that some parts of the park offer uninterrupted 360-degree views of grassland panoramas. Visitors on a tailor-made Liuwa Plains safari can expect dramatic skies as storms roll in, huge swathes of birds fill the air and a seemingly endless stream of grazers move into the grassy savannah to feed.

Luiwa Plains boasts a huge number of grazing species such as buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and antelope like the tsessebe, roan, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, red lechwe and eland among others. Predators can also be seen in good numbers on safari in Liuwa Plains including lions, hyenas, African wild dog and cheetah.

Birding in Liuwa Plains National Park

Liuwa Plains is an excellent birding destination with over 330 recorded species found in the park. Flocks of pelicans, storks and plovers can be found here year-round. During the wet months from November to April when the pan fills, a variety of water birds arrive, including the slaty egret and whiskered tern, two rare birding specials that breed in Luiwa.

Best Time to Visit Luiwa Plains National Park

Game viewing in Luiwa Plains is extremely seasonal and opposite to much of Africa, with November and early December tending to be the best time to visit with the arrival of the herds of the migration. Rain begins to fall during these months but the tracks have not yet deteriorated making traversing the park easier than in the months to come.
