Gombe Stream National Park
Small but perfectly formed, Gombe Stream National Park is home to some of the best chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania. Made famous by Dr Jane Goodall and her ground-breaking research into the behaviour of wild chimpanzees living in the area, Gombe is remote and little-visited, making a bespoke safari here all the more special.
About Gombe Stream National Park
Hidden away on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe Stream is the smallest national park in Tanzania, comprising open grassland, thick forests and steep valleys, sandwiched between tropical lake waters and a rocky escarpment. This unique micro-ecosystem is the perfect habitat for chimpanzees, and rivals Mahale Mountains National Park when it comes to the chimp trekking experience.
Renowned animal scientist Dr Jane Goodall made the park famous in the 60s and 70s with her studies of the chimpanzees that live here. Roughly 100 habituated chimps can be found in Gombe Stream National Park, and visitors are more or less guaranteed an encounter with these primates while trekking here.
Chimpanzee Trekking in Gombe Stream National Park
Chimpanzees are the stars of the show on any safari in Gombe Stream National Park, and practically everyone who visits has come to see them. Trekking into the forest to find the chimpanzees is the focal activity of any visit to national park, and there are three communities of chimps living here, with the large Kasekela group being habituated to humans. Guests can also visit Dr Goodall’s research centre and feeding station while in Gombe National Park.
Gombe Stream National Park
There are a number of other species that can be found on a tailor-made safari in Gombe Stream National Park, including red colobus, blue monkeys, bush babies and yellow baboons. Occasional sightings of bush pigs, hippos and leopard are also possible. Recorded species of birds in Gombe Stream National Park exceed 200 including African fish-eagles and palm-nut vultures. Nature walks to the Kakombe waterfall, Jane’s Peak and along the shore of the lake are also activities that can be enjoyed in Gombe Stream National Park.
Best Places to Stay in Gombe Stream National Park
There is limited accommodation in the Gombe Stream National Park area. Idyllically located on the lake shore, Mbali-Mbali Gombe Lodge is arguably the pick of the bunch. It makes a luxurious base from which to explore the national park, enjoy chimpanzee trekking and relax beside the tropical lake waters.

Best Time to Visit Gombe Stream National Park
Chimpanzee trekking is best between June and October. These are Tanzania’s drier months and trekking in Gombe Stream National Park is slightly easier. Additionally, this period is also the best time to visit nearby highlights such as Katavi National Park on a multi-centre Tanzania safari itinerary.
During the wet months between April and May, trails can become muddy and difficult to navigate.
