There is more wildlife per square kilometre here than anywhere else in the world, so it’s no surprise that safaris in Tanzania are amongst the most rewarding holidays in Africa. In fact, national parks and game reserves cover over 35% of the country, and this unbeatable variety of wilderness habitats and animal species, combined with a staggering choice of luxury safari camps and family-friendly lodges, makes tailor-made Tanzania holidays hard to beat for both wildlife and adventure.

  • Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is the ultimate safari destination, with more wildlife here than anywhere else in the world. A safari in the Serengeti is one of Africa’s best-known holidays, famous in particular for the abundance of big cats who are found here.

  • Ngorongoro Crater

Set within a 12-mile wide ancient volcano caldera, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most unique safari destinations on earth. Africa’s own ‘Garden of Eden’ is the best place in Tanzania to find the Big Five.

  • Zanzibar and Tanzania Beaches

Tanzania isn’t all about safaris, it has some incredible coastal regions too, and spending some time at the beach is the perfect way to end your wildlife adventure.

  • Selous Game Reserve

A safari in the Selous Game Reserve is a rewarding experience, with vast tracts of wilderness, huge wildlife populations and the opportunity for game viewing by boat on the Rufiji River.

  • Lake Manyara National Park

Wondering where to see tree-climbing lions in Tanzania? Then come on a tailor-made safari in Lake Manyara National Park and see if you can spot a pride hanging out in the branches, probably the most unusual thing to see on safari!

  • Tarangire National Park

One of the least visited parks on the northern safari circuit, Tarangire is a land of giants, with huge herds of elephants trundling along the dusty plains beneath towering baobab trees.

  • Ruaha National Park

Safaris in Ruaha National Park are all about authentic bush experiences with abundant wildlife, diverse landscapes and few other visitors.

  • Gombe Stream National Park

Small but perfectly formed, Gombe Stream National Park is home to some of the best chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania.

  • Katavi National Park

A tailor-made safari in Katavi National Park is a great example of how a little bit of effort can yield some truly spectacular rewards.

  • Mahale Mountains National Park

Step well and truly off the beaten track with a tailor-made safari to the remote Mahale Mountains National Park on the tranquil shores of Lake Tanganyika.

  • Arusha

The large town of Arusha is the gateway to parks on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, and the jumping off point for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Mount Kilimanjaro.

When to go

Tanzania’s dry season typically occurs from June to October. During these months, animals concentrate around permanent water sources making them easier to find. This is also the best time to visit Tanzania’s islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia for a beach holiday. The Great Migration usually occurs in Tanzania from mid-October to mid-July and it’s a good idea to book well in advance during this popular time.

Between the months of November and March wildlife viewing across Tanzania is still good, with less crowded parks and the chance of short rains bringing life to the plains.

The months of April and May are Tanzania’s wet season when wildlife viewing is more difficult and travel can become trickier.
