If diving, snorkelling and spending quality time at the beach is high on your agenda, then the weather is of course a huge factor in deciding when to travel. The dry season between June and October is the most popular time for a beach holiday in Tanzania, with excellent options on both the mainland and the Zanzibar Archipelago. Weather during these months is cool and dry with excellent visibility in the north of the island when it comes to exploring underwater.
December to February is also a great time to visit the coast, with hotter temperatures and fewer crowds. Humidity can be quite high so do factor in some chill-out time.
If you want to dive off Zanzibar’s southern coast, try to visit between November and March when sea conditions are at their best around this part of the island. This is an ideal time to dive off Pemba Island too after the monsoon winds have abated. Diving off Mafia Island is superb all year round, except between April and May when the entire coast braces itself for the long rains. Visiting during this period isn’t popular as the humidity can be stifling, and the water silts up making visibility poor.
