The best time for safari holidays in South Africa is between May and September, as these drier months are cooler with pleasant temperatures for enjoying game drives and bush walks. There’s virtually no rain during this period, and days are usually sunny with blue skies. Wildlife viewing is much easier in the dry season, as animals concentrate around permanent waterholes and riverbanks. This is a great time to visit the Kruger National Park and Madiwke Game Reserve, when temperatures are just right.
The malaria-free Eastern Cape Reserves are ideal for year-round safaris, and although it does rain a little from November to April, this doesn’t dampen spirits as showers are short, and wildlife is ever-present,
Finally, although it’s not strictly a safari experience, seeing the famous penguins at Boulders Beach just outside Cape Town is best experienced at the beginning of the year when the chicks are running riot. These iconic seabirds can be seen all year-round, although they spend much of September and October out at sea.
