Quirimbas Archipelago

Mozambique is one of Africa’s most pristine and least visited Indian Ocean beach destinations, and the Quirimbas Archipelago wears the crown when it comes to hidden gems. Exotic marine life resides amongst kaleidoscopic coral reefs in clear warm waters off idyllic beaches with very few other visitors. A tailor-made Quirimbas beach holiday is at the top of the list for many travellers to the country, particularly for those looking for a luxury Mozambique honeymoon.

About the Quirimbas Archipelago

Spreading across 400 km² of northern Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coastline, the Quirimbas Archipelago is one of Africa’s largest remaining areas of pristine marine wilderness. The region, made up mostly of small fishing communities, is relatively isolated from the rest of the country and until recently received almost no tourist visitors. In recent years with the opening of a number of small eco-lodges, and a strong push towards the growth of ethical and sustainable tourism in the area, visitor numbers are slowly growing. The remote location and high-end accommodation make the Quirimbas islands one of the best places for a luxury honeymoon in Mozambique.

The southern area of the archipelago is protected by the Quirimbas National Park which also covers part of the Capo Delgado region over on the mainland. Within the 7,500 km² national park are tropical mangroves, pristine coral reefs and paradisiacal beaches. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean provide a safe stopover for migrating sea birds, a home for swathes of tropical fish and a nursery for young whales and dolphins.

Things to Do in the Quirimbas Archipelago

Activities in the Quirimbas really are the stuff of a Robinson Crusoe castaway holiday, just with a lot of added luxury! For water-lovers there’s scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding, whilst those who prefer terra firma can enjoy cultural and historical tours, guided hikes and visits to sea turtle conservation projects. It’s also possible to go whale watching in season.
